Two of my great friends had been living in Cádiz, Spain for some time and were planning on moving back to the states soon. Naturally, this prompted Alex and I to immediately book a flight to visit them, as well as a couple of other stunning places along the way.
Our time in Spain was one of the best road trips we’ve been on– close friends, beautiful old cities, great wine and stunning nature. We split up our time across three places– Seville, Cádiz and Grazalema, with as many sights of Southern Spain we could see in-between.
Seville
Our first stop was Seville. This was our first time in Spain, and we were blown away by the laid back feeling of this stunning and historic place.
It was pretty rainy during our time in Seville, but honestly, that made it even more magical. There were fewer people around, and the sound of rain in the alleyways made it a totally different experience.
We had no agenda during this first leg of the trip, and spent our days eating tapas and drinking great wine. It was an incredibly relaxing place to off the start of our Spanish adventure.
Cádiz
We picked up our rental car and drove about an hour southwest to Cádiz to meet our friends. Whatever expectations we had were once again blown away by this tiny and ancient port city, surrounded by water on both sides. It was honestly hard to comprehend the centuries this place had been around, but its charm was as strong as ever.
Our friends showed us their favorite haunts and their beautiful home, and we collectively made it our mission to eat and drink everything delicious. This may have included some beer and popcorn 😉
Grazalema
We decided to take a small road trip through the Andalusia region, stopping at every small village we saw and taking in the beautiful smattering of buildings, all white clusters against the very green backdrop of the hills.
Our ultimate destination was Grazalema, a tiny pocket in the mountainside. So grateful my friends knew about this gem, because it was like nothing I’d ever seen. And I never would have known about it either, if not for them.
We actually stayed in one of the old homes that was available on airbnb, which made roaming the small village so simple and easy.
I am still savoring the inspiration I gathered while traveling around the southern part of Spain. There was so much nature, good energy, and beautiful colors and textures. But what I’ll remember most is the quality time with friends, affordable and delicious eats, and places that surprisingly felt like home the moment you entered them.
Parts two and three of this European adventure to come.
